The Harry Nilsson Episode

In this throwback episode we invited our friend Nikki over in Qatar to co-pilot. We talk about the life and songs of Harry Nilsson and somehow link to the Karate Kid franchise, rock writer Lester Bangs, and Dutch rock band, The Shocking Blue. How does it all connect? Let your ears connect the dots!

The Simpsons Episode

In this edition of the NewbsRadio archive we talk about the Simpsons, those lovable yellow characters who are still on the air now. I can hardly believe it, at the time of this recording I figured they were on their last legs but I was wrong. Also in this episode we talk to Chris O’Dell, a former Apple Records employee, who recants the time she found herself on the roof of Apple Corp Headquarters watching the Beatles play their final concert. Then somehow we touch on Michael Hutchence of INXS and throw in some Gwen Stefani for good measure.

The Copernicus Episode

In December 2012, we originally released this episode based on the life and times of the astronomer and mathematician, Copernicus, then we sort of got off track a bit and started talking about Bruce Springsteen. We honestly had no idea how to get back on track but then were miraculously saved by Alan Cross, James Burke and of course, Santa.

The WKRP in Cincinnati Episode

One of our favourite episodes where we link together songs and artists whose songs were removed from the original WKRP episodes when the music licensing lapsed 10 years after the episodes debuted. This led to some fairly ridiculous dialog overdubs included the now infamous, “Hold my order, terrible dresser”. In this episode we reference a lot of these moments as there were many of them, and then use them as jump points to drive our culture map!

The Rage Against the Machine Episode

From the NewbsRadio we have one of our favourite episodes where we get to speak with Canadian recording legend, Garth Richardson who was the man behind the knobs on Rage Against the Machine’s SEMINAL self-titled debut. Not only does this album create a strong case for what would be rap-rock’s beginning, but the production on the album is so good, that high end stereo shops still use it as a way to calibrate their system EQ. This episode features OG co-host David Newberry and includes a cameo by professional music geek, Alan Cross.

The Homestar Runner Episode

Here’s an episode from the ole archive where we connect Homestarrunner back to Homestarrunner based on some fun connections including Mr. Show’s David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, Seinfeld, and They Might Be Giants. On this show, we have guest Alexander Reed who literally wrote the book on TMBG’s seminal release, Flood which is available as part of the 33 1/3 series of books.

The Napoleon Dynamite Episode

This episode of NewbsRadio saw us connect Napoleon Dynamite through the other works of actor Jon Gries who played "Uncle Rico" in the film and who was gracious enough to sit down and chat about this role and others including 1985's Real Genius alongside Val Kilmer. From there we talk about The Who, Grand Theft Auto 4, and a guy named Mike Post.
